Each tape goes through a careful process: we inspect it first and make any needed repairs. For VHS and VHS-C tapes with mould, we clean them before transfer. After the initial transfer, we check the quality. If there are any issues, we'll transfer the tape again using different machines and settings, choosing the best version for your digital files.
Our success rate speaks for itself - around 95% of tapes are digitised with good picture quality, and over 99% of tapes are successfully transferred regardless of their condition.

Q. How do I convert old VHS tapes to digital?
To convert VHS tapes to digital yourself, you normally need to follow these steps:

1. Get the right equipment: You'll need a VHS player or VCR, a video capture device, suitable AV or S-Video cables and a computer with video capture software. Buying reliable equipment can quickly become expensive, particularly if you're only converting a small number of tapes.

2. Connect the VCR to your computer: Connect the video and audio outputs from the VCR to your capture device, then connect the capture device to your computer.

3. Play and record the tape: Play the VHS tape in real time while your capture software records the video and audio.

4. Save the digital file: Once the recording has finished, save or export the video in a modern format such as MP4. You can then store it on your computer, copy it to a USB stick, back it up online or share it with family.

Q. What do you mean by VHS to Digital?
When we say VHS to Digital, we simply mean converting the footage on your old VHS tapes into a modern format that you can watch today. You can choose how you'd like to receive your converted videos: as digital files in your own private cloud storage, on DVD, or on a USB memory stick. So 'VHS to Digital' is our general term for the conversion service rather than one specific output format. Q. What equipment do I need to convert VHS videotapes to digital?
You'll need a working VHS player or VCR, a video capture device, AV or S-Video cables, a computer and suitable video capture software. You'll also need enough storage space for the resulting files. The quality of the VCR and capture hardware can have a noticeable effect on the finished recording, which is one reason professional conversion equipment can produce better results than basic USB capture devices.
Q. Can you digitise damaged VHS tapes?
Yes, we can convert many damaged VHS tapes to digital, although the finished quality depends on the condition of the original tape. Some playback problems can be reduced during conversion, while physical damage may need to be repaired before the tape can be played safely. Damage already recorded into the picture or sound may still be visible or audible in the finished digital file.
Q. Can I digitise VHS tapes with tracking issues?
Yes. We can correct many of the tracking problems found on old VHS tapes. Our professional VCRs are maintained specifically for tape conversion and generally provide much more control than ageing domestic VHS players.

If a tape has tracking problems, we can try different machines and playback settings to find the best result. In rare cases, particularly where the original recording was made with a badly misaligned machine, some tracking problems may remain in the digital version. Q. Can I convert copyrighted VHS tapes to digital?
Copyright restrictions still apply when a VHS recording is converted into a digital file. Commercially released films, television programmes and other copyrighted recordings cannot simply be copied and distributed without permission from the rights holder. For this reason, our service is primarily intended for personal recordings such as home videos rather than commercially released VHS tapes.
Q. Can you add labels or titles to my digitised VHS videos?
Yes. Your converted files can be given clear filenames so it's easier to identify and organise the recordings once they're digital. This is particularly useful if you're sending us several tapes containing different family events, holidays or dates.
Q. Can you edit the videos when converting VHS to digital?
Yes. Once VHS footage has been converted into a digital video file, it can be edited using normal video editing software. You can trim footage, combine clips, add titles or create shorter videos from longer recordings.

As part of our VHS to Digital service, we also make appropriate adjustments during conversion and remove long sections that contain no usable footage.
Q. Where can I play my digitised VHS videos?
Digital video files are much easier to play than VHS tapes. MP4 files are supported by most modern computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones and Smart TVs. Q. How long does VHS to Digital conversion take?
Our normal turnaround is around 7 days from receiving your tapes, although larger orders may take longer.

If you're converting VHS tapes yourself, remember that the recording normally has to be captured in real time. A two-hour tape can therefore take around two hours just to capture, before allowing additional time for setting up equipment, checking the recording, editing and exporting the finished file.
Q. What are the benefits of converting VHS videotapes to digital?
Converting VHS tapes to digital makes old recordings much easier to watch, store, copy and share. You no longer need a working VCR, and digital files can be backed up in several locations rather than relying on a single ageing tape.

Digital video is also much easier to organise and edit. You can create copies for different family members, store recordings on USB drives, keep backups on a computer or cloud storage and watch them on many modern devices.
Q. Can you improve the audio quality when converting VHS to digital?
We aim to get the best available sound from the original VHS recording. Professional playback equipment can help reproduce the audio more cleanly, and digital processing can be used where appropriate to improve levels and reduce some unwanted noise. The finished result will still depend on the condition and quality of the original recording.
Q. Can I digitise VHS tapes that have subtitles?
Yes. Visible subtitles that form part of the recorded VHS picture will also appear in the digital conversion because they are part of the video image itself. This means subtitles already visible during normal VHS playback will remain visible when you watch the converted digital file.
Q. Can you improve the video quality during VHS to Digital conversion?
Yes. We use professional playback and conversion equipment to get the best practical picture from each VHS tape. We can reduce some playback problems, make appropriate adjustments to picture levels and remove long sections of blank footage where required.

The finished quality will always be limited by the original VHS recording, so converting a VHS tape cannot create genuine HD or 4K detail that wasn't present in the source. The aim is to produce a clean and stable digital version of the original recording.
Q. Can VHS tapes with date stamps be converted to digital?
Yes. If a date or time stamp is visible within the original VHS recording, it will remain visible in the converted digital video. This can be particularly useful for organising old family recordings and identifying when particular events took place.
Q. Can I convert VHS tapes to digital myself or should I use a professional service?
You can convert VHS tapes to digital yourself if you have a reliable VCR, capture hardware, suitable cables, a computer and video capture software. The main drawback is that good VHS equipment is now old and can be expensive to buy and maintain.

There is also a considerable time commitment because each tape normally has to be played and captured in real time. If you only have a handful of tapes, or the recordings are particularly important, using a professional VHS to Digital service can be simpler and more cost-effective.
Q. Will the aspect ratio be preserved during VHS to Digital transfer?
Yes. We retain the original aspect ratio when converting VHS tapes to digital. Most standard VHS recordings were made in the older 4:3 format rather than today's wider 16:9 format.

When you watch a 4:3 recording on a modern widescreen television or monitor, you may therefore see black areas on the left and right of the picture. Stretching or zooming the video to fill a 16:9 screen would either distort the image or crop part of the original picture, so keeping the original ratio gives you the full recording as it was intended to be viewed.
Q. What steps can I take to clean and prepare VHS tapes before conversion?
You generally don't need to do much before sending VHS tapes to us. Keep them in their cases where possible and avoid storing them somewhere damp, dusty or excessively hot.

Do not attempt to clean the magnetic tape itself using household cleaners or home remedies. VHS tape is delicate and incorrect cleaning can damage the recording. If a tape needs cleaning before conversion, it's better for us to assess and handle it using the appropriate equipment.
Q. Can VHS tapes with mono audio be converted to digital?
Yes. VHS tapes containing mono audio can be converted to digital without a problem. Where appropriate, the mono signal can be present across both left and right audio channels in the finished digital file, so the recording plays correctly through modern stereo speakers and headphones.
Q. Can you convert both PAL and NTSC VHS tapes to digital?
Yes. We can convert both PAL and NTSC VHS tapes, including recordings made overseas. Different television standards require compatible playback equipment, which is why some foreign tapes won't play correctly in an ordinary UK VHS machine. We have multi-standard equipment for converting these tapes into modern digital video files.
