What you can expect from us.

Your memories are irreplaceable - this is how we’ll take care of them

We only use professional-grade equipment, which we keep well maintained, to get the best possible quality from your tapes.
Each tape goes through a careful process: we inspect it first and make any needed repairs. For VHS and VHS-C tapes with mould, we clean them before transfer. After the initial transfer, we check the quality. If there are any issues, we'll transfer the tape again using different machines and settings, choosing the best version for your digital files.
Our success rate speaks for itself - around 95% of tapes are digitised with good picture quality, and over 99% of tapes are successfully transferred regardless of their condition.

The UK's Favourite Video to MP4 Converter

Sitting down to watch home videos at a family outing, “enjoying” clips from auntie's and uncle’s holidays, birthdays or even a wedding video.

It's obvious that these old videos hold some of life’s most special moments and treasured memories.

But, technology has moved on, and hardly anyone has a VCR and old tapes are obsolete and deteriorating.

MP4 is a far more accessible, modern and long-lasting format, so converting VHS to MP4 is the perfect way to preserve and relive your precious memories for years to come, making them easy to watch on phones, tablets, laptops or smart TVs.

VHS video transfer is the conversion we carry out most often, and we've digitised hundreds of thousands of hours' worth of tapes since we started Digital Converters. We’ve got the best equipment, highly-trained technicians, and a shameless love for nostalgia.

Just order online, send your tapes off to us and we'll do the rest. Your tapes couldn’t be in safer hands!

FAQs

Q. How do I convert old VHS tapes to MP4?
To convert VHS tapes to MP4, you’ll need a working VHS player and a digital video capture device that connects to a computer via USB. From there, you can record the footage in real time using video capture software. It’s a slow and fiddly job though, so many people prefer to use a professional service like ours to save time and get better results.
Q. What makes converting VHS to MP4 different from other digital formats?
MP4 is the most universal digital video format—it works across all modern devices including phones, tablets, and smart TVs. Other formats like AVI or MOV can be less compatible. Unlike DVD transfers, MP4 gives you a file you can copy, share, store, and back up wherever you like. See our VHS to USB page for storage options.
Q. What equipment do I need to convert VHS to MP4 at home?
You’ll need a VHS player, a video capture card or USB converter, AV or SCART cables, and a computer with suitable video software. A monitor is also helpful for checking playback. The gear can be costly or hard to find, which is why many people choose to send their tapes to us instead.
Q. Can you digitise damaged VHS tapes to MP4?
Yes. We handle worn and damaged tapes regularly. While we can’t reverse serious damage, we do clean and prepare each tape to get the best possible result during transfer. The digital copy will reflect the tape’s condition, but our high-end equipment helps minimise issues wherever possible.
Q. Can you fix tracking issues on VHS tapes before converting to MP4?
Most of the time, yes. Our professional VCRs handle old tracking problems far better than consumer-level players. If the tape was originally recorded out of alignment, we’ll test it on multiple machines to find the cleanest playback possible. If problems remain, we’ll let you know before completing the conversion.
Q. Can I convert copyrighted VHS tapes to MP4?
If the tape is commercially released and copyrighted, we cannot legally convert it for you. UK copyright laws allow personal backups in limited cases, but our service is strictly for personal, non-commercial footage such as home videos.
Q. Can you add file names or custom titles to my MP4 videos?
Yes, we can name each MP4 file based on your tape labels or instructions. That way, your digital videos are easy to identify and organise on your computer or USB stick.
Q. Can you edit the videos before converting VHS to MP4?
Yes. We trim out long blank sections as standard, and can also split or merge files on request. If you’d like additional editing, let us know—we offer light editing and video enhancement for most formats.
Q. Will my MP4s play on all devices?
Yes, MP4 is compatible with nearly every modern device: phones, tablets, laptops, smart TVs, and cloud platforms like Google Drive or Dropbox. That’s why we recommend it over older formats like DVD.
Q. How long does it take to convert VHS to MP4?
Our standard turnaround is a day or 2 for a single tape, and you'll be able to stream or download it as soon as we've completed the conversion and uploaded it. It takes about 7 days from when we receive your tapes to you receiving the originals back. Doing it yourself takes the full length of the tape in real time—plus setup, editing, and encoding—so it can be a big commitment for longer collections.
Q. Why should I convert VHS to MP4?
MP4 lets you watch your videos anywhere without needing a disc or VHS player. It also gives you the option to share clips, back up files in the cloud, and keep your memories safe from tape wear or damage over time.
Q. Can you improve the sound quality when transferring to MP4?
Yes. Our digitising process includes audio balancing, de-hissing, and noise reduction where needed. This means your old recordings often sound clearer in their digital form than they ever did on tape.
Q. Will subtitles from my original tape be kept in the MP4 version?
Yes. If subtitles or captions were embedded in the video image, they’ll be preserved exactly as they appear on the tape. They’ll be ‘burned in’ and can’t be switched off, just like the original recording.
Q. Can you improve the visual quality when converting to MP4?
We make small enhancements as standard—such as boosting contrast, sharpening soft footage, and cropping blank sections. These subtle tweaks help make your video clearer without losing the original look and feel.
Q. Will the original date stamps be preserved in the MP4 file?
Yes. If your camcorder added a visible date/time overlay during recording, that information will appear in the MP4 just as it does on the tape.
Q. Will the original aspect ratio be kept in the MP4 file?
Yes. Most VHS footage is in 4:3, which will appear with black bars on wider screens. We don’t crop or stretch the image unless requested, as this can cut off details or degrade quality.
Q. How should I prepare my VHS tapes before sending them in?
Just make sure each tape is labelled, and free from obvious damage. You don’t need to rewind or clean them — we’ll handle that with professional tools if necessary.
Q. What happens if my VHS tape has mono sound?
We’ll duplicate the mono audio across both stereo channels, so your MP4 plays sound evenly through both speakers or headphones. It won't make it true stereo, but it’ll sound better than a single-channel recording.
Q. Can you convert both PAL and NTSC VHS tapes to MP4?
Yes, we handle both formats. Whether your tape was recorded in the UK (PAL) or overseas (NTSC), our equipment will convert it to a modern MP4 that plays on any device.
